I t seems a far-fetched notion that cable TV can help you learn a new language, but nothing could be closer to the reality of the process involved in learning and retaining the use of new language. Perhaps to be more accurate, it would be entirely valid to state that cable TV can help you learn a new non-native language which is available through the regular programming on one of the cable TV channels. Cable TV in countries where the native language is English for argument’s sake, has various programs which are televised in Spanish, Dutch, German and a variety of other foreign languages. Now, if your interest is in Spanish, and you consistently immerse yourself in Spanish speaking TV programs on your cable TV, then you are well on your way to learning how to understand and communicate in Spanish. The pace at which you acquire the new language is based on a number of factors of course unrelated to cable TV programming in a foreign language. Some of the factors will include whether you’re supplementing your foreign language viewing with formal lessons, how quickly your own personal ability for learning a foreign language is etc. But barring all of these factors, cable TV alone is a pretty effective way of learning a new language, not least because one of the critical factors in acquiring a new language includes constant exposure in that language. And fortunately watching cable TV programs in a foreign language allows you as much constant exposure as you are willing to immerse yourself in.
