S tunningly beautiful, unbelievably diverse, and spectacularly immersive are some of the superlatives jump to mind when you visit Patagonia. Stretching across southern Chile and Argentina, it covers more than one million square kilometers. A visit to Patagonia takes you up some jagged peaks, vast grassy plains, fathomless forests, and mammoth glaciers. Three times the size of Germany, the region is scarcely populated with only two million inhabitants. Most of the land is pristine, presenting you with a frontier where nature grows wild in a hauntingly beautiful manner. That said, you will spend lots of time on the road if traveling by bus. To get most of your experience, you need to time your visit just right. Spring, September to November, brings warm days and chilly nights, thin crowds and affordable prices. Summer, November to February, the skies are clear, the days are sunny, the nights are cool, and the tourist crowds are massive. The scenery is lush and green, making a perfect time to pitch camp in the Torres del Paine National Park. Autumn, March to May, brings chilly days, rain and snow, thinning crowds, affordable rates, and beautiful scenery. Most areas are still accessible. Winter, June to August, coincides with snow- and ice-covered landscapes, the perfect time for winter sports and great outdoor exploration.
