Thanks to its positions, a patio can be considered a sort of extension of the house. Having it paved – if it isn’t – might be a good idea as it can become the main location for summer parties and barbecues as well as an outdoor spot to enjoy your meal in the sun.
What materials should you use?
The first thing you should do is plan how you want your patio to be. To you want a paved area, maybe with an outdoor oven? Do you want it open or closed? These are all things you should take into account. Another important thing is the style of your home – as the patio is an extension, the style of the two shouldn’t differ that much. If your house is in the Mediterranean style, you might want to pave your patio with stone or terracotta while if your house is more traditional then bricks might be a better idea. Concrete is also an option as it is more neutral. Also, if you want a covered space, think about what you’d like – a pergola, an awning, or a trellis? That too should follow the general style of your house.
How should you furnish it?
Again, you should think about what you are going to do in your patio. Do you want to have friends over for a barbecue? Would you like an outdoor bar for summer partying? Your tastes and habits should be taken into account when choosing what to add to you patio. Popular ideas include fire pits and grills, hot tubs, and garden furniture such as table and chairs, and sun lounges. Also, consider adding a few knick-knacks – just because it’s outside, there is no reason to keep it basic! Add cushions in splashy prints (just remember to buy them in waterproof fabric), candles, and torches.
