heumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of autoimmune origin. It is caused by an abnormal reaction of the immune system that suddenly "attacks" the joints of the body.
This disease occurs with an acute onset that gradually worsens producing bone deformities. Learning about Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms and treatment is crucial for patients.
The early symptoms include joint stiffness, swelling, edemas and intense joint pain. The disease progresses causing difficulties in performing usual movements, such as lifting weights and picking up objects. Late symptoms include weight loss, as consequence of the internal inflammation, and bone cysts which deform the joints in an irreversible way.
An early diagnosis is crucial to control rheumatoid arthritis. A blood test is the first step to take. High Protein C Reactive "PCR" values in the blood indicate an internal inflammatory process while high Rheumatoid Factor levels will confirm the autoimmune nature of the disease. X-rays, CT scans and MRI will show articular lesions.
The therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, if started early, allow complete regression of the symptoms and full recovery of joint function. Corticosteroid are usually prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain while immuno-suppressants like methotrexate will counteract the abnormal response of the immune system.
