s someone who suffers from migraines, I am aware of how difficult and debilitating they can be. The pain can frequently stop sufferers from going about their day-to-day lives, while conventional painkillers often offer very little relief.
Sufferers will know that triggers can vary wildly: whilst certain foods or bright lights are common triggers, other times a migraine may be caused by more unusual things such as strong smells, dehydration, or even changes in the weather. Up to 30% of sufferers are able to tell when a migraine is coming on, due to something called an 'aura'. This is a feeling (which again varies considerably between individuals) which lets the sufferer know an attack is coming on.
For those of us who do not get auras, a sudden attack of pain may come out of nowhere, which can completely change the day's schedule. Sometimes lasting multiple days, migraines can prevent people from working, attending social activities or engaging in other commitments.
All of this can seem very hard to deal with, however, there are many treatment options available. This can include over-the-counter painkillers (some of which are specifically designed for migraines), or removal of certain triggers. It is important to note that everyone is different, so professional input is essential.
Going to see your GP regarding your individual case will allow them to better tailor treatment options to your personal needs, in order to provide effective pain relief. You may at first be asked to keep a diary documenting your attacks and what may be causing them, helping professionals to recommend courses such as prescription medications or diet regimes. No matter your situation, migraines can be handled and managed to improve quality of life.
