E very year about 88,000 people die from alcohol abuse and in 2015 there were 3,674 deaths by drug poisoning deaths in England and Wales alone. People start taking in alcohol and drugs for various different reasons but the most common reasons furnished by the addicts are:-
  • It helps them relieve stress and anxiety
  • It makes them feel high spirited
  • It helps them fit in with others of their group
  • It makes them forget their pain
  • They see their roles models or adults doing drugs or consuming alcohol and immediately infer that it is ok for them to do it too.
But both drugs and alcohol do more harm than good. Addiction of either or both causes nausea, mood swings, hallucination, confusion and blackout on the physiological level. Their effects on our physical well being are even worse. Alcohol, like a serial killer, slowly affects all our organs. Be it heart, brain, liver, pancreas, kidneys, stomach, bones, teeth, skin; they all get targeted by it. Increased alcohol consumption can also cause cancer. Drugs are like alcohol’s partner in crime. It also affects the organs causing dizziness, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, kidney and liver damage and might even cause HIV AIDS, hepatitis and other illness. Apart from the physical and physiological effects, these have adverse impact on one’s social life as well. An addict likes to stay aloof from his family and friends and might unintentionally pose a danger to himself and people around him. It is essential for these people to get off their addictions for healthy physical and social life. And here comes the role of rehabs. The rehabilitation centres or rehabs through the administration of medication and constant supervision and support, help people not only to detox but also helps them get back to their normal ways of life.
