o one would consider going without a medical insurance, so why do so many people go without a dental insurance? The two work in a similar way: you choose the plan that best suits your lifestyle, then pay a quota every month which in turn entitles you to certain treatments. Plans vary of course, just as the monthly rate does: basic plans might include more simple treatments such as regular checkups, x-rays, and dental cleaning while other, more comprehensive plans might also add oral surgery and implants to the mix.
What plan is the best?
Unfortunately, there is no "best" plan for everyone and, as stated before, dental insurance plans vary and it all depends on what your and your family’s needs are. Plans are generally listed under two different categories: "Indemnity" plans, which offer you a greater range of dental care providers from which to choose, and managed-care plans. Also, "Indemnity" plans require you to pay your dentist at the moment of treatment and to receive a reimbursement of the expenses only later on.
When choosing a dental insurance plan, what you need to think about is:
- Your budget – How much are you willing to spend every month?
- The dentist – Study the list of dentists and dental care providers your plan is offering you: is there a doctor you trust? If not, will you be reimbursed if you see a dentist outside this network?
- Waiting list – Is there a waiting list for certain procedures? Does your dental insurance plan provide you with a higher place on the list?
After you have answered these questions, ask an insurance provider for help in choosing the best plan to fit your needs.
