he onset of winter tends to send many people into hibernation mode and all well-intentioned plans for exercise go out the window Aim to combat that with a switch-up to your regular workout routine and burn calories while being productive and trying something new!
Making a cool-kid comeback is Curling – a sport that many have relegated to senior folk along with lawn bowls and knitting… But this winter-workout will not only burn a few calories, but its probably our best chance to still make Olympic grade. Well, maybe not but its good fun. Burn around 400 calories sweeping your way to victory in the ice, (and maybe sneak in a quick pint as reward)!
If a curling club isn’t on hand, but you do live in a snow-covered area, investigate beginner ski lessons or try your hand at snowshoeing. These two activities will get you out and enjoying the fresh air and each will burn upwards of 250 calories. Add on a bit of driveway snow shovelling at around 200 calories per driveway and you’re away!
Or, maybe you have a pair of skates lying around the house and are ready to get back on the ice. Indoor or outdoor skating is a great, fun workout and will see you (for around an hour’s worth of ice-time) powering through 300 calories. If you’ve got some skill on the skates, think about joining your local hockey team.
If none of this appeals, or you’re looking for a warmer option, there’s always a home workout of hot yoga (crank up that central heating!) or house cleaning that will get our heart rate up.
