ow that you are moving off to school, there are a few things you should know while you are getting ready to move out of your parents house and enter adulthood. Renting can be intimidating at first, but if you remember these three things you will be on your way to success!
1. Get renters insurance
When you move into your own place, you cannot get homeowners insurance. Why? Because you don’t own the place! But that's fine. Homeowners insurance is expensive and time consuming. What you can do is get renters insurance. This will protect all of your belongings in case of an accident. If you already have car insurance, you can add renters insurance to your policy and pay very little, sometimes just an extra $10 per month, to secure your belongings.
2. Pick comfortable roommates
If you are picking roommates, make sure to be honest with yourself and choose people you could actually feel like yourself around. After all, living with someone is a big decision. If you prefer your quiet time while you are home, make sure to pick someone that shares that same belief. If you are loud at home, pick roommates who would be ok with your lifestyle so you don’t disrupt them and cause unnecessary attention.
Sometimes, many people who want to be social once entering college choose roommates based on what they want to be, rather than who they are. Getting quiet roommates doesn’t mean you can’t go to parties! It means you have a quiet place to go back to.
3. Shop at the Dollar Store
The Dollar Store has everything you need for your new place. They have trash cans, shampoo, cleaning supplies, toilet plungers, welcome mats, light bulbs, batteries, wires, and everything you need for your new place! Spending $20 at a dollar store can give you all the cleaning supplies and personal hygiene materials you need now that you are on your own. Those don’t just grow on trees, you know!
